Shoin Kiriko Matsuri 2026 Experience
The Shoin Kiriko Matsuri fills the streets of Shoin, Suzu City with Kiriko, lively music, and the energetic Yakko-furi, a traditional procession performed by young men in colorful costumes. Held on September 14 and 15, the festival’s highlight comes on the second afternoon when colorfully dressed participants skillfully throw fur-covered poles called shanga to one another across the street.
A Brief History
The Shoin Kiriko Matsuri is held at Susu Hachiman Shrine, which has long been an important religious site in eastern Suzu. The shrine was supported by the Maeda clan, who are said to have contributed land and helped rebuild its Noh stage. The Yakko-furi is traditionally linked to ceremonies held for Noh performances, when performers and guards arriving at the shrine were welcomed and escorted by local participants.
